- Good Morning All.
-
- After purchasing and installing some cables and connectors, I've
- finally been able to connect a spare Quantum LPS40, and a Viper
- tape drive to my Squirrel PCMCIA Host adapter. Up 'til now
- I've only had a Chinon 2X CDROM on the SCSI bus.
-
- I have an A1200 with GVP A1230Turbo board with 5M fast Ram, no MMU/FPU
- in the trapdoor. Heretofor I've had no problems with memory address
- space and using the CDROM, ie I show 5M fast with or without mounting
- the CDROM and the CDROM works flawlessly using SCSIMOUNTER, and the
- supplied CD0: driver. Diskchanges /insertions work just fine.
- I'm running ADOS3.1 on both my miggies.
-
- Last night I removed the box holding the spare HD and Tape drive from
- my A500/Xetec FasTrac where they work fine (I could manage the drive
- both with HDToolBox or Xetec's SCSITools). The HD had been most recently
- prepped with HDTOOLBOX on the A500. (and fortunately was empty) I then
- disconnected the CDROM (to avoid double termination) and plugged in the
- external drives. The Tape drive is on SCSI ID=6 and works flawlessly
- withn BTNTape and tar, in fact I got my first backup of my internal
- 120MB IDE drive. However, the HD is another story.
-
- I was able to partition and format the drive using SquirrelHDToolBox.
- (the original formatting /RDB's off the A500 weren't recognized)
- BUT! as soon as I try to mount the HD just about all of my free
- memory disappears!. If I mount from the Startup-sequence (S:user-startup)
- all but about 100bytes of chip ram disappears also. (I barely manage to boot).
- If I manually run SCSIMounter from the workbench then I only lose most
- of my fast mem and fragment the hell out of chip. (for example I will have
- about a meg of chip but unsufficient memory to run format.)
-
- As a side note, and this may or may not be related to the above problems;
- This particular quantum drive always used to operate improperly (read/write
- and checksum errors) unless I switched on the SCSI subsystem first, waited
- 10 seconds, powered down and then brought up the system. This peculiar
- behaviour did not occur with any of my other drives (a LPS105, and Seagate/
- Cirrus 20MB drive). I always assumed there was some weird jumper setting
- that might fix this but without documentation I just put up with the problem.
- I did allow for this by power off resetting a few times.
-
- Both this drive and the 20MBer came off macs.
